Capturing people in photographs is one of my favorite types of photography. Whether I am posing portraits, finding a candid moment or creating abstract snapshots, I always find something captivating in human expressions. Click through this slideshow to view photography.

For the May 2010 issue of the Ball State Alumnus, we dedicated six pages to a photo story about the Department of Theatre & Dance’s season of productions, After sifting through thousands of photographs, I selected the images featured. Careful considerations were made in the selection process to depict the variety of productions, as well as groups, close-ups and motion images. In this layout, use of the plain white background draws eyes to the images. The sidebars for award-winnings students were created in a way as to not overpower the featured photographs.

In February, we launched our first web-only Ball State Alumnus magazine, using Calameo (a free flip viewer generator service). It was an opportunity for me to retrain myself and our staff on audio and video editing. We embedded audio, video, and external links into our magazine flip viewer. This is a growing area for us. We are expanding into more video stories and photo slide shows for our next issue, as well as providing more convergence between the magazine and social media outlets like Facebook and LinkedIn.

Many events surround a common theme. With the design of the collateral materials, it’s great to just have fun with a theme, like this “wild west” themed postcard for a senior congrats graduation party. I edited the Charlie Cardinal to add a bandana and cowboy hat. I also used a stock photography wanted poster to add to the theme.

Each week, I volunteer at the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) in Muncie, Indiana. I take photographs of dogs who are available for adoption to post on www.petfinder.com. My objective is to show their personalities in photographs in the hopes of Petfinder visitors developing an instant connection with ARF animals and ultimately leading to adoptions.

At the Ball State University Alumni Awards Dinner, alumni are honored in various areas. This program serves as a guide for dinner guests to review current and past award recipients. The object of the program was to combine the Homecoming theme of the weekend’s activities with a formal look to the layout. The program is a black and red ink only 9″x9″ piece and was printed on a gloss cover stock.

In 2004-05, I worked with the Partnership for Economic Development to creating the brand identity for the Community Access Network (CAN), a networking system for health and human services in Delaware County, Indiana. Our goal in branding was to create an upbeat logo and color theme to draw attention to CAN. From a logo and brochure to a newsletter template and billboard, we achieved our goal created a similar feel with each piece.

Designing covers for the Ball State Alumnus magazine takes much planning to find the perfect images. Each cover displayed grabbed the attention of our alumni with impacting photography. While the football and Indiana Senator Richard Lugar covers are straight forward photography, the Ball Sweethearts cover involved layering new elements, such as birds and heart clouds, into an image of a Ball State staple, Beneficence. In color correcting each image, I found the best balance for printing on matte cover stock and web views.
